'A Lifetime Of Devotion - The Making Of A Neon Artwork - by douglas gordon'
In 2021, during the Covid 19 pandemic, Turner Prize-winning artist Douglas Gordon decides now is a good time to make a neon sign artwork for his cousin, John Higgins. They grew up together in Bonnie Scotland and have worked together on several projects. What makes this artwork a wee bit tricky is that John lives in Australia and Douglas in Berlin. With airports and countries in lock down Douglas can't fly in to oversee the manufacture of the piece.
It could have gone horribly wrong but of course, the result is beautiful. With remote direction and the assistance from John (who is an Art Director in film and tv) they enlist the services of Trevor (whose surname coincidentally is also Gordon) at Neon Magic, Gold Coast, Australia, and turn a conversation, an idea, a sketch, into a beautiful neon artwork.
The entire story plays out in this edited 14 minute video of the manufacture process.
The second part of this piece entitled 'I Second That Emotion', is featured at Douglas Gordon's 'Neon Ark' installation at Gagosian gallery, London (2022/2023).
